2014 Imagine Cup: Lautech qualifies for World Semi-Finals
Having won the national finals after competing with eight other teams from Nigerian Universities during a challenging day of presentations of innovative solutions recently, students from the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomosho are currently jostling to fly Nigerian flag at the World semi-finals.
Accordingly, the team stands the chance to compete in the Imagine Cup World Finals which will take place in Seattle in July 2014 if they win the semi-finals.
Although expectations and anxiety are still high, only two countries from Africa will fly the continent’s flag at the world stage this summer.
However, Adefioye Temidayo, Faleye Benjamin, Oyebisi Jemil and Ibraheem Bello of Team High Rise are the national winners in this year in the category of World Citizenship.
Team High Rise had developed a solution, Catara which serves the purpose of drastically reducing the rate at which cataract causes total blindness.
Team High Rise will join the brightest young minds to represent Africa just like team Code 8,showed how the power of technology can take on Africa’s and the world’s toughest problems.
Team High Rise will join the brightest young minds to represent Africa just like team Code 8,showed how the power of technology can take on Africa’s and the world’s toughest problems.
In previous years, only a few of the very best teams made it all the way to the World Finals and received global recognition for their hard work.
In 2nd place, was Team Eagle from The Federal University of Akure (FUTA), with their solution Enchanter, which created virtual business cards that can be shared using near field communication (NFC). I Team ABU from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, came 3rdwith their solution Mayday, which acts as an emergency alert and response application.
For the Nigerian winning team for the world semi-finals, it was a worthwhile experience and a good beginning to face the challenges ahead.
“We are so excited to have won today’s competition – and to have the opportunity to represent Nigeria at the World Semifinals,” Adefioye Temidayo of Team High Rise , said.
According to him, “And we’re thrilled to have the opportunity to compete with students from around the globe who, like us, are passionate about making a difference in the world.”
“Each team that competed in the competition is deserving of the highest recognition for the creativity and imagination applied to some of the world’s biggest challenges.
“We’re proud to honour these young students who we believe truly exemplify the spirit of the Imagine Cup competition, and we’ll be cheering Team High Rise on as they compete on the world stage.
“Imagine Cup is also directly aligned with the Microsoft 4AfrikaInitiative that was launched last year as it drives access to technology, innovation and world-class skills.
“We believe deeply that technology can accelerate growth for Africa, and Africa can also accelerate technology for the world.”Shina Oyetosho, Director, Developer Platform Evangelist for Microsoft Nigeria, said shortly after announcing the results.
For Shina who is very passionate about building tech start-ups for the knowledge economy, “Teams who compete in all three contests will end up with significantly better Imagine Cup projects because they will be prepared to pitch, plan, and build their ideas,”
Imagine Cup is a student software competition which centers on the use of imagination, creativity and technology to help solve some of the world’s toughest problems.
In this year’s Imagine Cup,every first-place winner of the National and Online Finals will be able to compete in a whole new round: the World Semi-finals which launched on the 1st May.
This round allows all of these first-place teams to be celebrated on the Imagine Cup web site so everyone can hear their stories, see their projects, and be inspired by their imagination and passion. World Semifinalists will compete against each other in a global judging round to select the few teams invited to the World Finals but every single World Semifinalist team will be eligible for prizes including Imagine Cup’s Visual Studio Online Boost, in which nine teams will receive $1,000 each for using the cloud-based power of Visual Studio Online to collaborate, plan, and implement their projects.
Each of the 9 competitors were honoured for their work to address some of Nigeria’s toughest challenges.
This year, in keeping with the changes to the Imagine Cup competition, new contests have been added including: the Pitch Video Challenge, which since September last year has allowed students to submit a five minute video pitch for their project.
This year, in keeping with the changes to the Imagine Cup competition, new contests have been added including: the Pitch Video Challenge, which since September last year has allowed students to submit a five minute video pitch for their project.
The competition is also in the final weeks of the Project Blueprint Challenge, where teams take a deep dive into their thinking and prepare a ten-page document exploring their concept and creating user person as, top user stories, business models, and demonstrate how they have already sought and incorporated feedback from potential users.
In January 2014 the User Experience Challenge was launched to recognize great design as being more important to great software than ever.
It would recalled that more than 1.65 million students across the globe had participated in Imagine Cup during the past decade, creating applications and games that address the world’s toughest social problems.
For one thing, the competitors in the Nigerian Finals for Imagine Cup 2014 have joined student innovators from across the globe to take their innovative and ground-breaking ideas from concept to marketplace with Microsoft resources.
Last year, Team Code 8 from Uganda won the United Nations Women’s Empowerment Award for their app, Matibabu, which helps detect Malariawithout pricking a body part.
By attaching a Kinect sensor to a user’s finger, their malaria status is fed into their smartphone within seconds, and for free.
“From the heart of Africa, here is an innovation that has the potential to save lives all over the world,” says Oyetosho.
The team won 12,000 USD in addition to training and mentor ship to develop their application.
Imagine Cup is more than a competition. As part of Microsoft’s YouthSpark initiative, it is a way for young entrepreneurs, innovators and developers to have the opportunity to develop an idea, create a product, and set a clear business plan that will take their product to market. (Vanguard)

A graduate of Architecture Department, Ladoke Akintola University (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, has emerged the best student in the professional examination of the Nigerian Institute of Architecture (NIA).
The institution’s Public Relations Officer, Mr Lekan Fadeyi, made this known in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ogbomoso on Tuesday.
The statement said Dahunsi Adeyemi El-Amin, a 1998/99 graduate of the institution, emerged the overall best student in the recent Professional Practice Examination of NIA.
“Dahunsi is the overall best of the 172 members who sat for the recent NIA examination,’’ the statement said. The statement recalled that two graduates of the same department had also emerged the best in the NIA examination in 2010.
It said that Oluwaseun Bamidele of the 1995/96 set won three out of the four prizes while Tolulope Egbewumi of the 1992/93 set also emerged the best student in the same category.
The performance of the graduates, he said, was a true reflection of the quality of education they acquired at the university.
The statement said that similar feats had been recorded in other departments, adding that the institution would not relent in its efforts at turning out quality graduates.

Explosive Photoshoot: URP 300 level students anticipate exclusive log out
29th April, 2014 will forever linger in the heart of 300 level students of Urban & Regional Planning, Lautech. The much anticipated La-Rex Media Day (LMD) / URP Class '15 tagged "CORPORATE PLANNERS" was held after the last paper for the session. LaRex Media is owned by two Ladokites who are strictly into photography and video-production.
As at the time of gathering this report, about 500 pictures were taken with the students dressed corporately at New 100 level lab complex. The event started around 11am with prayers from both religion (Christianity & Islamic), after which the 10 nominated (5 from each gender) best dressed planners were voted for by their level mates.
Emerging first at the male category is Mr. Sola (A.K.A Biscuit) and Akano Abiola was voted best dressed in the female category. The best 3 in each category were given gifts courtesy LAUTECH Google Student Ambasdadors. One of the high point of the event was the giving away of free airtime for the fastest fingers on their mobile phones.
The event was brought to a close with class '15 group pictures, clique pictures and individual pictures.
If the organization of the event could be this perfect at 300 level, how will their final year logout event would be? Watch out for URP Class '15 [The Spartans]!
